Initial situation.

The CALIDA Group—comprising of CALIDA, Lafuma and Aubade—wanted to work more closely in the future, leverage synergies and jointly increase productivity. Every member still operated their own IT infrastructure which, apart from exchanging e-mails, works completely separately from the rest of the group. Tighter coordination was needed—most importantly shared calendars and secure data exchange between certain departments like HR and IT—and is ever more crucial for corporate success. And because CALDA was still using the 2007 version of Office, they wanted across-the-board rollout of Windows 10 asap.

Solution.

The project was divided into several sub-projects. After the basic installation of Azure Tenant and Sync services, the Office 365 Pro Plus project was initialised in order to allow for simplified VPN access to all three environments. This was combined with the pending Windows 10 rollout to create a cloud-ready client. In the next step, SharePoint team sites were configured in order to allow use of the file library as a single, joint data storage solution. Files can now be securely and efficiently shared between group companies. In addition, the Exchange infrastructure was also overhauled: First, a hybrid connection was established for each of the three existing environments and the mailboxes subsequently moved to the cloud to enable complete group-wide collaboration, including calendar sharing. Employing Office 365 technologies simply and elegantly solved the technical requirements as well of those of the business.

Currently, Calida Group members Calida, Lafuma, and Aubade all operate their own, discrete Exchange infrastructures. Introducing Office 365 under a shared tenant will allow us to dramatically improve productivity and collaboration between these companies for the future without adding complexity.

Business benefits. 

Implementing Office 365 at CALIDA, Lafuma and Aubade delivered the flexibility and functionality they needed. All business units and departments can now work together efficiently and securely—in continually updated environments hosted by Microsoft and based on the three existing infrastructures. And the joint Azure components hasn’t meant sacrificing the handy single sign-on, since each unit continues to operate its own ADFS server. The companies are now able to collaborate without the unnecessary complexity of a cross-forest migration which would otherwise be the case in such a situation.

Future.

As the project, developed and implemented by Comsoft’s Office 365 Competence Centre, continued to progress, the benefits of Office 365 & Azure for CALIDA became clear. Comsoft’s Office 365 Competence Centre will remain CALIDA’s Microsoft Public Cloud Partner and will oversee future projects in this area.
